“I can’t emphasize enough the importance of having a network” advised Ng Hsueh Ling, Managing Director, Singapore and Chairman, Lendlease Global Commercial Trust Management, Asia, during the sixth instalment of the Up Close and Personal series.
In a discussion facilitated by Young Leaders Group (YLG) Committee member Kristie Wong, Hsueh Ling shared stories brimming with her passion for real estate, dealmaking and being of service to others. Her humility in forging authentic relationships, and motivating others to go beyond their comfort zone left an indelible mark on our student members.
Hsueh Ling’s commitment to helping others shone through in how she carried out the discussion. The format of the session was unlike any other. Instead of a typical question-and-answer format, it was, for most of the session, getting to know each student member’s background and providing candid advice.
The discussion kicked off with Hsueh Ling giving students an honest take on the real estate industry, where she revealed the relatively mundane work that goes behind the glitz and glamour associated with the industry. For instance, facilities management and corporate finance theories are just one of few “dreary” concepts that juniors must master to earn their stripes. She also stressed the importance of asking questions when placed in a new position, reading widely and attending meetings prepared. These small habits go a long way in displaying one’s commitment to the job and ability to be a resource to others.
Then came the topic of change; students shared about significant decisions in their lives such as a change in college degree or moving to Singapore. Hsueh Ling is a strong proponent of seizing opportunities that come by, especially international opportunities. Speaking to her own experience, she shared how it was a whole new world when she moved to Seoul as Chief Executive Officer of Korea and Japan while she was at Ascendas Ltd. Dealing with “VUCA” (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity), she discovered that it was the relationships with her team that led to success. Treating them with respect and love, they went the extra mile to grow the portfolio. This brings us to the final topic of building relationships.
It was evident that building relationships is a topic that Hsueh Ling holds close to her heart, as she spoke about how she is still in touch with her ex-colleagues from Korea. To the student members, she encouraged them to step out of their comfort zones to meet new people; and advised how paying attention to the smallest things and efforts, such as social cues and following up, mattered. Her stories in Korea exhibited her humility in forging authentic relationships, while those in dealmaking demonstrated her ability to both build trust internally and engage externally. All of which were qualities that certainly impressed upon the attendees as they continue to build out their career.
We encourage students to join ULI and gain access to knowledge and peers as we work as a community to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. To find out more, email [email protected]
