Faith Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor of Science (Real Estate) with a specialisation in Finance, Honours. She is one of the 3 recipients of the WLI Singapore Commendation Award 2023. ULI Singapore sat down with Faith to find out more about her.
I am Faith, a NUS graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Real Estate and a specialisation in finance. Based in Singapore, I would be joining Oxford Properties as an investment analyst this July.
Fresh out of junior college, I had a passion for geography and was intrigued by the built environment. Effective urban planning and buildings can create a sense of space and community. It was my aspiration to play a role in shaping future skylines.
I was then drawn to real estate given the various pathways, ranging from urban studies to valuation and investments. During my course of study, I slowly uncovered my interest in real estate investments. This spark began on exchange when I was exposed to higher level finance modules. The varying nature of different assets was intriguing. No asset is ever the same, even within its sector.
Internships in various disciplines within the real estate industry allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation of storytelling. Moving beyond the numbers, crafting a strong investment thesis was essential. A skill that comes with deal experience, it is something that cannot be really taught in school.
Fundamentally, taking ownership of my learning was key. Asking questions and understanding the rationale behind decisions of my supervisors was eye-opening. This exposed me to different perspectives and broadened my horizons.
Outside of academic pursuits, I enjoy hiking and going on long walks. I also enjoy cooking and feeding those around me.
ULI has an established presence and a network of professionals across different real estate disciplines. It is heartening that the organisation seeks to increase the visibility and career development opportunities for women in the industry. The Women’s Leadership Initiative is indeed a great step forward towards more female representation. With that, I am honoured and excited to tap into the resources as well as the community at WLI. I would like to extend my gratitude to Michelle, Wei Leng, and Shin Hui for taking the time to speak with me. I look forward to participating in quarterly meetings and other events.
As a fresh graduate beginning my career, I look forward to contributing to the team, learn from leaders and gain experience in the entire investment process. Beyond that, I also aspire to network with other individuals within the industry, and of course, tap into ULI’s network, events, and resources.
