Tang Wei Leng, Managing Director and Head of Capital Markets, Singapore, Colliers
I am grateful to ULI for the opportunity to serve as Co-Chair of the Woman Leadership Initiative (WLI) from July 2020 to June 2023. It is both an honor and privilege to serve.
Together with Wanshi Zheng, we succeeded Hwang Yu-Ning and Magdelene Chua when their 2-year term ended. It was then Dorscon Red when Pauline Oh, together with the outgoing chairs who approached us to hand over the baton. From barely knowing Wanshi and then Tan Shin Hui, now three years on, I am proud as I reflect at the pandemic years where we all got to know one another well.
Looking back, we had to be creative as we were limited with in-person opportunities. Thanks to Wanshi who gave good purpose to our many activities by structuring them around two pillars – Women Empowerment and Engaging Agents of Change and Stakeholders. These two pillars are the focus of WLI Singapore activities allowing the many outstanding women volunteers in the WLI Steering Committee to lead WLI activities. I am proud to say we have come a long way from our Powwow dinners initially designed for informal mentorship; to the zoom meeting “Honestly Speaking” with Jaelle Ang and He Jihong moderated by Kong Huijin; in-person events such as “Women in Proptech and Real Estate”; the soft launch of “Champions of Change” with Kwek Eik Sheng and Benett Theseira; and “Insider series” with Karen Tay Koh.
I am proud that together with the WLI Steering Committee past and present, we were able to roll out many engagement activities during the pandemic, continuing to connect with our members. Two of the most significant milestones in my role as Co-Chair were, firstly, the pledge to be a Champion of Change endorsed by both corporates and individuals and, secondly, the WLI Singapore Commendation Award which we received generous funding support from the WLI Singapore Advocates. Aligned with these objectives, ULI Singapore, with funding support from the WLI Singapore Advocates aims to build the pipeline of women entering the real estate industry. We achieve this by engaging students and exposing them to ULI’s mission to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide.
Through my WLI activities, I have enjoyed meeting and working with many successful women. I appreciate their time, contributions, passion and friendships. I see many similarities and embrace the differences. I have learned a lot and appreciated different perspectives enriching me with new lens to look at work and life. It was not all just work, we had lots of fun too – many late nights of brainstorming over either red wine or WhatsApp calls! Such is the magic when women come together! I am blessed to work with two very inspiring Co-Chairs, Wanshi and Shin in succession, the dynamic Michelle Wong of ULI Singapore without whom we would not have been able to execute all our great ideas. Other many great women include Mireille Wan, Angela Lee, Ng Li Ling, Gek Lang, Wee Su Lin, Chan Hui Min, Mdm Fun Siew Leng… the list goes on.
I am confident that the WLI Singapore Co-Chairs Shin and Wee Su Lin will continue to build and strengthen the WLI vision and focus into the future through the two pillars of empowerment and stakeholder engagement.
